Excel Path/Filename
Tip (Not Trick!)

To display the path and filename of your file in a cell of your Excel spreadsheet, simply type this into the cell: =CELL("filename")

What you’ll see is the network or computer location of your file and the name of the individual worksheet in the file, in a path format that looks something like this: Q:\Shared Folders\Employees\[Employee List.xlsx]Sheet1

You’ll see it right in your Excel worksheet on your screen – you don’t need to print preview or print it to see it.

You can also insert a header or footer and click on the file path or file name, as well as a number of other identifying elements, to display this info in your header or footer, rather than in an actual cell of your worksheet. It’ll show up when you print preview or print the file.

Either way, you’ll never lose an Excel file again!

Dear Murphy,
Is it just me or am I seeing a trend? I find that people don’t always feel a need to respond to my emails. I think it’s rude. I don’t want to take it personally, but frankly, it does seem like a personal affront. Is it just me?

Dear No, It’s Not Just You,
It is an unfortunate trend, but rest assured, you will stand out as a professional employee if you don’t fall into that trap yourself. And you are not the only person asking this question.

Granted, many emails are a waste of time and we are dealing with too many emails, but ignoring people cannot be interpreted as anything other than rude. Here are some thoughts for people who ignore emails:

  • The general rule is that you should respond to emails within twenty-four hours. If you can’t respond in a timely manner, reply to the sender with a brief explanation and specify a target time when you will respond.
    • Dear John, I’m buried in the quarterly report. Will get back to you Tuesday.
    • Dear John, I need some time to research the answer to your question. I’ll get back to you by the end of the week.
  • If you are unable to attend to emails for an extended period of time, create an Out of Office reply and if possible, provide the name and contact information of someone the sender can get in touch with, if necessary.
  • Keep up with your inbox on a regular basis. Set aside a time when you won’t be distracted and stay focused on what you are doing. Multitasking between email and other tasks actually causes each to take longer. Focus on the task at hand to save time.
  • Don’t ignore your customers or they may not be your customers much longer. (Now there’s a way to reduce emails!).
  • Don’t ignore your co-workers. You never know when you’ll need a timely response from them.
  • Bear in mind that the way you conduct your business communications says a lot about your professional image.
