How to Turn Off the AutoPlay Function

Do you waste precious time waiting for AutoPlay to search your flash drive or external hard drive when you plug it in? If you’re annoyed by waiting down-time, you’ll appreciate this helpful tip.

Here’s what happens by default: You plug in your drive and it spends anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes scanning your drive. Finally, a dialog box pops up that says “This disk or device contains more than one type of content. What do you want Windows to do?” It then gives you a number of choices like Play using Windows Media Player, Copy Disk, Copy pictures to a folder on my computer, etc. This AutoPlay function might sometimes be helpful, but if you have a lot of content and it took several minutes to do the scan, you could have made that selection yourself much more quickly.

If you’d like to avoid the time consuming scan, you can turn off the AutoPlay function. Here are the steps to follow –

  1. Attach the device to your computer
  2. Select the My Computer icon on the Desktop
  3. A list of hard drives and other devices will be displayed
  4. Place your cursor on the desired device and Right Click on it.
  5. Select Properties from the list.
  6. When the Properties display appears, select the AutoPlay tab.
  7. In the dropdown box, select Music files
  8. In the Actions section, press the Select an Action to Perform button, then select Take no action and press Apply
  9. Return to the box that says Music files and click the arrow for the drop-down box; select the next option of Pictures. Repeat step 8, again selecting Take no action. You can do the same for Video Files , Mixed Content and Music CD.
  10. When you have finished setting each option to Take no action, press Apply and then press OK.

If in the future, you decide you want to re-enable AutoPlay, simply return to this location and click on the Prompt me each time to choose an action, or select one of the other actions to perform.
