MURPHY’S MANNERS
POLISHING YOUR PROFESSIONAL IMAGE
Dear Murphy,
My boss asked me to introduce a guest speaker at the next branch meeting. I’m hoping for a promotion, so I want to look polished when
I do this. I’ve noticed that some people give graceful introductions and others seem awkward. Is there a protocol for savvy speaker introductions?
Dear Speaker Savvy,
Knowing how to introduce a speaker is an important skill in our business lives. Bad introductions are so common that you’ll shine if you follow a
few guidelines. Keep it brief—a minute or two at the most.
The introduction should include the following:
- Speaker’s name
- Speech topic
- Background and credentials that relate to the topic
- How the audience will benefit from the information
- Say, Please help me welcome 'speaker’s name'
- When the person nears the podium, step back and welcome the speaker with a handshake
Then there’s the wrap up following the speech:
- Go to the podium and shake hands again as the speaker leaves.
- Give a few summary comments and say how you and the audience will benefit from the information.
