Dear Murphy,

I just started a new job and my desk is in a cubicle. I’ve never worked in a cubicle before, and I was very embarrassed recently when a co-worker asked me not to use the speakerphone. She said it is distracting to the other workers.

So what am I supposed to do? I have to participate in conference calls. I’m between a rock and a hard place with this dilemma.

Dear Cubicle Confusion,
Your quandary is not unusual. The etiquette surrounding cubicles has evolved over time, but the rules are now generally accepted.

If you have to join in a teleconference, try to locate an empty conference room or ask a co-worker for suggestions. Some companies provide an empty office for conference calls. You could also walk your cell phone to a location away from the cubicles.

Here are some other things to consider when working in a cubicle:

  • Talk softly.
  • Avoid strong perfume/cologne and food smells.
  • Don’t “prairie dog” (poking your head over the partition to talk to a co-worker).
  • Don’t interrupt other people’s conversations. Mind your own business.
  • Don’t interrupt co-workers who appear deep in thought or who are talking on the phone.
  • Don’t enter someone else’s cubicle without an invitation.
  • Don’t take a seat in another person’s cubicle without an invitation.
  • Keep your cubicle tidy. A messy cubicle is unprofessional.
  • Avoid personal phone calls. If you must take a personal call, take your cell phone somewhere that won’t disturb others.
  • Put your cell phone on vibrate. People don’t want to listen to your clever ring tone.
  • If you are sick, stay home.
